Government purchases over 24,000 tonnes of Boro rice in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, July 29, 2024 (BSS) – The government has set a target of procuring 24,850.62 tonnes of rice and 6,657 tonnes of Boro rice from the seven government food warehouses in the district during the current 2024-25 season this year.

On May 7, procurement of Boro rice and paddy began in all seven government food warehouses. The main objective is to provide farmers with a fair price for the newly harvested grain.

District Food Controller Md Kamal Hossain said the rice is being procured directly from the 312 registered contract millers at the government fixed price.

He said the government has set a target of procuring a total of 24,850.62 tonnes of rice and 6,657 tonnes of Boro rice from the district this season.

Boro rice is being purchased at the rate of Taka 45 per kg and paddy at the rate of Taka 32 per kg. The collection drive started on May 7 and will continue till August 31.

He said the Joypurhat district food department has already collected 18,998,723 tonnes of rice and 2,037 tonnes of paddy.

The District Food Controller said that a massive publicity campaign has been carried out so that the registered mill owners can sell their rice directly to the government food warehouse at the government fixed price.
