DOJ to Oversee Maricopa County Primary Election Compliance with Federal Law

PHOENIX – The U.S. Department of Justice will keep an eye on Maricopa County during Tuesday’s primary elections.

The department announced Monday that it will monitor compliance with federal voting laws as voters in Arizona’s most populous county cast ballots on Election Day.

The Justice Department regularly works to enforce laws protecting voting rights across the country, sometimes deploying federal monitors.

Monday’s announcement did not say why the Phoenix area was singled out for surveillance on Tuesday.

The Justice Department also oversaw the 2022 elections in Maricopa County

In 2022, observers were sent to five Arizona counties, including Maricopa, during the general election. In total, the DOJ monitored 64 jurisdictions across the country for that election.

Citizens may file complaints about possible violations of federal voting rights law by calling 800-253-3931 or through the website of the Department of Justice’s Division of Civil Rights.
