Only one county in East Tennessee is seeing an increase in early voter turnout

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Early voting in Tennessee for the Aug. 1 primary wrapped up on Saturday, with data showing only one county in East Tennessee had higher turnout.

According to the Secretary of State’s office, there were 353,774 early voters in Tennessee, which is 39.39% fewer than the 583,704 who voted early in 2020.

In East Tennessee, only Campbell County saw an increase in early voting participation. In 2020, 1,918 people voted early, but this year there were 2,609 early voters, a 36 percent increase. It was the largest increase of any county in the state.

As for other counties, most saw double-digit declines from 2020. The largest drop in early voter turnout in East Tennessee was in Cumberland County, which recorded a 70% drop, according to the secretary of state’s office.

Statewide, there were a total of 227,454 early voters who registered as Republican and 119,614 early voters who registered as Democrat.

According to the secretary of state’s office, six of the seven days with the highest turnout were among Democratic voters after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.
