Discover history in motion at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in August

This August, visitors to the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum can immerse themselves in history through a variety of free programs, from motorcycle run-ups to tank simulators, model building and expert lectures. Visitors can purchase general admission tickets to not only explore the incredible collection of vehicles, aircraft and artifacts, but also participate in free programs on select days throughout the month.

Aircraft Engine Testing and Mechanic Q&A | Thursday, August 1 – Saturday, August 3, 2024, 10:30 a.m.

Experience the roaring engines of historic aircraft, including the Mosquito and B-25 Mitchell, the first weekend in August. Aircraft engines must be started as part of the annual maintenance cycle. Guests will have the opportunity to observe the process, including start-up and taxiing, of each aircraft involved, including:

  • August 1: P-47 Thunderbolt and Il-2 Sturmovic
  • August 2: Mosquito & B-25 Mitchell
  • August 3: A Hurricane, P-40 Tomahawk and Fw 190 A5
Visitors can watch the aircraft come to life and ask questions of the engineers in a Q&A session after the runup. For an enhanced experience, museum visitors can purchase a VIP Viewing Area ticket for the engine runups. These tickets cost $100 and offer prime visibility and photo opportunities from a special viewing ramp. The VIP viewing area is available with the purchase of a special event ticket, which can be purchased online.
Flying Heritage Combat Armor Museum tank

Tank Survival Simulator | Friday, August 9, 2024, at 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM

Dive into the world of tank survival through the eyes of a tank driver with two immersive simulators. Participants can choose between two experiences: a tank survival simulator and a remote control tank driving experience. On Friday 9 August, museum visitors can participate in this experience all day long by purchasing a general admission ticket.

AMPS Model Building Demonstration | Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Join experts from the Armor Modeling and Preservation Society (AMPS) at the museum to build models and ask questions. Participants will learn about armored vehicles and scale modeling. This drop-in event is included with the purchase of a general admission ticket to the museum on Saturday afternoon.

The Battle of Britain: A Narrow-Margin Reading | Saturday, August 10, 2024, at 2:00 PM

Join Lecturer Gareth Wade at the Battlefront Theatre for a. Gareth Wade, Senior Lecturer at FHCAM, has a lifelong interest in the history of the Second World War, which ultimately led to him joining the museum as a lecturer in 2011.

Lecture and book signing: Hunting battles WWII | Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM

Steve Church is a pilot and author who was inspired by the fighter pilots and fighter planes of WWII. Their influence propelled him on a journey from flight instructor and aerobatics instructor to 25 years as a corporate pilot. Hunting battles WWII, inspired by his popular seminar in Oshkosh Aviation, covers four main topics: basics, shooting, formations, and dogfighting.

A student of WWII combat tactics and history for over 45 years and with extensive experience simulating WWII aerial combat in fully aerobatic light aircraft, Steve will educate museum visitors on WWII aviation tactics through the eyes of a fighter pilot. The lecture and book signing are included with the purchase of a general admission ticket. Copies of his book, Hunting battles WWII, will be for sale and the author will be available to sign books.
