Several massive landslides struck various hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district early on Tuesday, leaving several people suspected to be trapped. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) reported that Fireforce and NDRF teams have been deployed to the affected area, with an additional NDRF team en route to Wayanad.
Two teams of Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been instructed to move to Wayanad to assist in the rescue efforts, according to a Facebook post by the KSDMA. Locals from the affected areas report that many people are feared to be trapped, and the ongoing heavy rainfall is hindering rescue operations.
Television visuals showed water gushing through rocks and fallen trees, with many houses destroyed. “The situation is serious. The government has pressed all agencies into rescue,” state Forest Minister A K Saseendran told Reuters. The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy rain in the state on Tuesday, complicating the relief efforts.
Relief efforts are ongoing, and helicopters of the Indian Air Force have been mobilised, the Kerala chief minister’s office said in a statement. Rescue efforts were hampered as there was no internet connectivity in the area, Mohsen Shahedi, a senior National Disaster Response Force officer, noted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed anguish over the loss of lives in landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district and assured Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of all possible help from the Centre to deal with the crisis. The prime minister announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.
Eight people, including three children, died in the landslides that hit Kerala’s hilly Wayanad district on Tuesday, according to officials.
In a post on X, Modi said, “Distressed by the landslides in parts of Wayanad. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured. Rescue ops are currently underway to assist all those affected.”
“Spoke to Kerala CM Shri @pinarayivijayan and also assured all possible help from the Centre in the wake of the prevailing situation there,” he said.
Official sources said the prime minister also spoke to the two Union ministers from the state, Suresh Gopi and George Kurien, over the prevailing situation.

IMD predicts heavy rain for five districts of Odisha on Tuesday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rainfall for five districts of Odisha on Tuesday, a bulletin said.

IMD’s Bhubaneswar regional centre also issued a yellow warning (be updated) for the five districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur.

The weather office also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Angul, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Boudh, Khurda, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Deogarh, and Sundargarh districts on July 31.

Apart from these districts, light to moderate rainfall would be experienced in many other parts of the state, it said.

Orange alert in Himachal

The meteorological office has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorm and lightning over the next two days in seven districts of Himachal Pradesh. A total of 45 roads, including 29 in Mandi, eight in Kullu, four in Shimla and two each in Kangra and Kinnaur districts are closed for vehicular traffic and 215 transformers are disrupted across the state, the emergency operation centre said. The Met also sounded a yellow alert for heavy rain on July 30 and August 2 at isolated places in the state.
