Vaulter Ryan Dall, 3 Top Teams Included

When the Rockland Sports Hall of Fame came knocking earlier this year, they knew former North Rockland and University of Miami pole vaulter Ryan Dall would have other things on his mind than attending the 2024 induction dinner by mid-April.

After all, Dall is the head coach of the Texas A&M-Kingsville track and field team, and April was in the middle of the Javelinas’ spring season.

The organizers decided not to induct Dall on April 12 along with eight others, but to wait until the summer. He would then be honored during a New York Boulders baseball game, the period in which the baseball hall traditionally inducts the best teams.

It will take place in the right field porch at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Clover Stadium in Pomona. The Boulders will play Tri-City at 6:30 p.m.

Rockland Hall of Fame game tickets are $50 each and include a buffet. Tickets can be purchased by calling Karen McCombs at 845-364-0009 or at https://fevo-enterprise.com/Rocklandcounty4

Some basketball and football teams are honored alongside Dell. Here are the other inductees:

The rest of the field for the Rockland Sports Hall of Fame

  • 1953-54 Tappan Zee boys’ basketball team: The highest scoring team went 16-0 and won the Section 9 title.
  • North Rockland girls’ soccer team from 1999: The Class A state champion (23-0) averaged more than five goals per game, won 17 games without allowing a goal and finished the season ranked No. 2 in the nation.
  • 2008-09 Nanuet girls basketball team: Class B public school champion and state federation champion.

Dall won consistently throughout his career

Of course, all have gained a lot. But Dall did so over a long period.

Dall, now 48, spent part of his youth in gymnastics, which gave pole vaulting a definite plus, helping him develop spatial awareness, speed and upper-body strength. Dall pole vaulted from seventh grade through his senior year in 1994 for his father, then-North Rockland coach Gene Dall.

His father, a member of The Armory Coaches Hall of Fame and Rockland Sports Hall of Fame, left North Rockland after 47 years in 2017 to become an assistant coach to his son with the Javelinas. With both Dalls as coaches, Texas A&M-Kingsville won the NCAA Division II men’s outdoor team championship in 2018.

The younger Dall, whose father built him a pole vaulting platform in their Tomkins Cove yard, once held the state high school pole vault record, with a height of 15-9, and the outdoor record, with a height of 16-4.75.

He won one indoor and one outdoor state title and was both a Penn Relays and National Scholastic outdoor champion. His 16-4.75 mark also earned him an unexpected silver medal at the U.S. Junior Nationals. It was a personal best of over seven inches and he went on to compete for the U.S. in Canada at the U20 Pan Am Games.

Dall cited his performances at Junior Nationals and winning the Rockland County pole vault title for the first time as a freshman as highlights of his high school career.

“It probably wasn’t that much expected. As I got older, everyone expected me to win, including myself,” he explained, noting that the county title also had special meaning because track and field had been such a big part of his life and although Rockland was small, the level of competition was high.

“It meant a lot to be county champions,” Dall said.

Dall later received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Miami, where he cleared 17 feet (5.22 meters) and became a two-time Big East champion.

After his studies he immediately started working as a coach at university level.

He is a multiple Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year (his team has won the conference twice) and received the national coach of the year award after his team won the championship in 2018.

But while the Rockland Hall of Fame induction may be smaller in scale, Dall said its significance to him is great.

“It’s definitely a great honor. There have been so many great athletes from Rockland County in so many sports over the years,” he said.
