Woman with history of shoplifting charged with thefts at Wegmans

A Lansdale woman with a prior conviction for shoplifting has been charged by Montgomery Township police with two felonies: shoplifting and receiving stolen goods. She allegedly stole about $200 worth of groceries from Wegmans in Montgomeryville.

On July 1 at 12:53 p.m., police were called to Wegmans at 804 Bethlehem Pike for a late night report of shoplifting. Upon arrival, police spoke with a loss prevention officer who said a woman, identified as Hurt, began placing groceries in a shopping cart and reusable bags, police said. After Hurt selected the merchandise, she left the store without paying and stole a total of $112.45 worth of items, police allege.

On July 17 at 12:23 p.m., police were again called to Wegmans for a shoplifting in progress.

Upon arrival, police spoke with a loss prevention officer who said Hurt placed Red Bull in reusable bags in a shopping cart, according to the affidavit. After selecting the drinks, she purchased a loaf of bread but did not pay for the Red Bull, totaling $89.96, police said.

She then attempted to leave the store but was arrested by police, according to the complaint.

According to police, Hurt had three previous convictions for shoplifting on her record.

According to court records, Hurt posted $77 bail on Thursday. As previously reported by North Penn NowThe $77 bail is a type of code indicating that a pretrial detention order had been issued for the defendant at the time of the arrest and that she would remain in custody due to prior violations of her parole or probation.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 6 at 9:45 a.m. with District Judge Andrea Duffy presiding.

Hurt has an active case in Lansdale Borough District Court, where charges were filed via summons a day before Montgomery Township charged Hurt in the shoplifting case. Records show Hurt is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Edward Levine on Aug. 21 at 1:30 p.m. on a charge of misdemeanor DUI for the Lansdale arrest.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
