Oaktree Capital is now fully focused on football and is now targeting Inter Milan, after selling French club Caen to Kylian Mbappe.

This is evident from today’s printed edition of the Milanese newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

In May, the American fund Oaktree acquired Inter.

The fund has been dormant in the background for a number of years, ever since they provided a huge loan to former Nerazzurri owners Suning in the spring of 2021.

The terms of the loan were such that if Suning defaulted, control of Inter would pass to Oaktree.

And that is exactly what happened.

Despite Suning’s attempts to find a solution to repay the full amount they owed Oaktree (including interest), they were unable to do so before the deadline in May.

That is why Oaktree has been the owner of Inter for the past few months.

Since the takeover, Oaktree and Inter have found their way.

The American fund has appointed a new board of directors. They have also appointed an experienced CEO Beppe Marotta Inter President replaces Steven Zhang.

This is the first summer transfer window for the Nerazzurri with Oaktree at the helm.

The American fund has placed its own representatives Katherine Ralph and Alejandro Cano in key positions of influence at the club, a duo that has worked closely with Inter’s existing decision-makers.

Meanwhile, Oaktree is also selling the other football club it controlled.

New Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe has decided to sign French Ligue 2 club Caen.

The 25-year-old Caen bought through holding company Coalition Capital. The fee for this deal was around 15 million.

That’s why Oaktree is now focusing entirely on football, on the much larger operation that Inter runs.
