Dubai Municipality to conduct 52,233 inspections in the areas of environment, health and food in the first half of 2024

  • The municipality carried out approximately 26,566 inspections through six campaigns held to monitor health and safety activities
  • It also hosted 18,374 inspection visits to various catering establishments, including restaurants, to ensure the health and safety of the food
  • About 4,331 inspection Visits were also organised to monitor the safety and sustainability of the maritime environment, nature reserves and industrial facilities
  • In addition, 2,962 inspection visits were carried out, targeting slaughterhousesveterinary organizations and general pest control companies

Dubai Municipality conducted 52,233 inspection visits in the areas of environment, health and food in the first half of 2024. These visits were aimed at ensuring that various activities and organizations in the city adhered to the set standards related to consumer products, food safety, health and safety, as well as general health, in addition to the approved environmental standards.

Dr. Naseem Mohammad Rafee, Acting CEO of the Environment, Health & Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, Dr. Rafee emphasized the municipality’s commitment to conducting regular inspection visits and campaigns throughout the year to create a robust food and health ecosystem, as well as a sustainable and conducive environment that supports flexible food supply chains and ensures food security in Dubai. Dr. Rafee further stated that the municipality is committed to maintaining a sustainable environment and preserving natural resources, thereby strengthening Dubai’s position as an attractive and sustainable city with an exceptional quality of life.

Dr. Rafee said: “Dubai Municipality places great emphasis on the food, environment and safety sectors. We continuously strive to develop these sectors and improve their safety through monitoring to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality of life in the emirate. In addition, we strive to provide a state-of-the-art infrastructure that supports the growth of businesses and initiatives while ensuring strict compliance with all laws, regulations and guidelines in Dubai and the UAE.”

Health and safety

The municipality’s health and safety teams, made up of 95 supervisors, carried out 26,566 inspection visits through 6 campaigns targeting hotel facilities, shisha cafes, hair salons, beauty centres, workers’ housing and social markets. The teams also ensured the safety of public places and buildings, as well as playgrounds and event venues, in addition to industrial and professional enterprises, infrastructure projects and temporary activities.

In addition, the municipality’s campaigns targeting ports assessed more than 17,000 shipments of consumer products, equivalent to 145,000 tons, ensuring that they met approved consumer specifications and requirements. It also ensured compliance with these safety standards by supervisory organizations specialized in the trade of consumer products.

Food Safety

Dubai Municipality’s food safety inspection teams conducted approximately 18,374 inspections of hospitality establishments in Dubai’s markets, including restaurants, hotels, cafes, as well as commercial centres, hypermarkets, supermarkets and temporary venues, covering 31 events. In addition, there were a total of 2,733 food safety reports.

Moreover, the number of hospitality establishments in the emirate reached 25,000 in the first half of 2024, while another 1,373 new establishments were opened during this period.

Environmental sustainability

Dubai Municipality’s environmental teams have completed a total of 4,331 inspection visits, of which 3,378 were inspections of projects, industrial and service facilities. The municipality uses a smart inspection system to efficiently plan and execute environmental monitoring tasks, thereby streamlining its operations. In addition, the municipality is conducting a virtual awareness campaign to ensure that companies comply with approved environmental laws and regulations.

The municipality also conducted a total of 783 inspections, which focused on monitoring the marine environment, observing coastal areas and collecting samples from the sea. These inspections further ensured that all projects within these areas comply with the environmental laws and regulations in the emirate. In addition, the campaigns included 170 inspection visits as part of the Dubai Nature Reserve Monitoring Programme.

Public health

In line with its massive monitoring and inspection activities in the field of public health, the municipality’s teams made approximately 2,962 visits to ensure strict compliance with technical and health regulations. Of these, 2,625 visits were to inspect veterinary facilities and 337 visits were to public health pest control enterprises. In addition, it issued 305 No Objection Certifications (NOCs) for veterinary activities and 1,963 veterinary health certifications for export shipments.

Similarly, Dubai Municipality handled a total of 3,305 reports related to stray animals and incidents of non-compliance with animal welfare regulations and institutional rules. It also conducted inspections of approximately 160,402 slaughtered animals at Dubai’s slaughterhouses to ensure their safety for human consumption. It also examined the arrival of 584,276 livestock and 465,445 tonnes of feed and food through the emirate’s entry points.

Dubai Central Laboratory of Dubai Municipality has inspected 13,600 legal measuring instruments such as tire pressure gauges, fuel gauges, taxi meters, electronic scales of various capacities and pre-packaged products. The compliance rate exceeds 99 percent.
