Israel targets Hezbollah commander in Beirut attack

Israel has targeted a top Hezbollah commander in a Beirut suburb in retaliation for an attack that killed 12 children on Saturday.

Witnesses heard a “loud explosion” in the Lebanese capital, which has been on high alert since Israel vowed to respond to a rocket attack.

The attack targeted Fouad Sukar, who is responsible for Hezbollah’s military activities, in Beirut’s Dahieh neighborhood, known as a Hezbollah stronghold.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had promised a “stern response” to the attack on the Golan Heights.

The US has reportedly called on Israel to avoid Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, and its civilian infrastructure to avoid collateral damage.

Israeli officials thought an attack on Beirut would be escalating but did not rule it out, Haaretz reported Sunday.
